Krrish 3 ([ˈkrɪʃ 3]) is a 2013 Bollywood superhero science fiction film produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan.[4] It is the third film in the Krrish series following Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) and Krrish (2006).[5] The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi, Priyanka Chopra, and Kangana Ranaut in the lead roles. The story follows the life of Rohit Mehra, a scientist, and Krishna Mehra a.k.a. Krrish, his superhero son, who face an elaborate conspiracy orchestrated by the evil genius Kaal and his female henchman Kaya. In the process, Krishna's pregnant wife Priya is kidnapped by Kaal and the form-changing Kaya takes her place at the Mehra home and eventually falls in love with Krishna.

Krrish 3 was initially scheduled to release as a 3D film.[6] However, due to lack of time to convert the film to 3D, director Rakesh Roshan mentioned that the film will be released only in the 2D format. Krrish 3 released worldwide on 1 November 2013.[1][7] It has since received mixed reviews from film critics with praise directed towards Roshan and Ranaut's performances, the visual effects, and the cinematography; criticism has been directed to the music provided by composer and the director's brother Rajesh Roshan, the story and screenplay.[8]

Plot
The plot of the film connects with the predecessor. For more information on the predecessor's plot, see Koi... Mil Gaya and Krrish.
Scientist Rohit Mehra lives with his son Krishna "Krrish" Mehra (both played by Hrithik Roshan) in Mumbai. Krishna is married to Priya (Priyanka Chopra) who works as a journalist for Aaj Tak. Rohit works in a research institute for the Indian government and Krishna, while moon lighting as the superhero Krrish, is regularly fired from various day jobs due to lack of attendance. Rohit is researching on a device that will bring life to dead tissues by the use of solar energy. Despite several attempts, he fails to complete the experiment due to the high intensity of sun rays. On a usual day, Krishna loses his job from the security wing of a company when he hears news about an aeroplane whose front tyres are stuck due to some malfunctioning which creates high risk, even if landed, it may explode and so will the passengers inside. Krishna immediately changes himself to Krrish and saves the plane from accident by holding the component to make tyres free to roam.

A few days later, Rohit hears about a deadly disease spreading in Namibia due to a virus whose antidote has not yet been discovered. He consults his friend Dr. Varun Shetty (Arif Zakaria) about the situation. Meanwhile, Shetty receives a phone call from Dr. Alok Sen (Asif Basra), a scientist working for Kaal Laboratories who insists on meeting him in order to reveal information about the virus and its antidote. Both Sen and Shetty are, however, murdered by Kaya (Kangana Ranaut), a shapeshifting female mutant. She is the henchwoman of Kaal (Vivek Oberoi), a handicapped evil genius who possesses telekinetic powers. Kaal creates a team of human-animal hybrids called "maanvars", with distinct physical powers in order to cure himself but fails. Later it is revealed the virus in Namibia was spread by Kaal himself to incur huge profits by selling its antidote, the singular source of which is his blood.

Rohit discovers that the virus, which is fast spreading through Mumbai, has no effect on Krishna, the pregnant Priya or himself. He, thus, makes an antidote by using the blood from Krishna's bloodstream which he spreads with the help of explosions. An enraged Kaal sends his mutants to attack Rohit and find out how an antidote was developed without using his own blood. Krrish manages to save Rohit, but Priya is injured and hospitalised. Krrish, however, manages to defeat the mutant Striker (Gowhar Khan). Kaya, carrying out Kaal's instructions, shapeshifts into Priya while Priya is kidnapped by Kaal. In the form of Priya, Kaya leads Krishna to believe that Priya has lost her child, and continues to live with the Mehras. While finding the truth behind the antidote's formula she develops an attraction towards Krishna. Failing to get answers about Frog Man's involvement with the virus attack, Rohit travels to Singapore to seek answers from Dr. Siddhant Arya's (Naseeruddin Shah) partner, where he is kidnapped by Kaal's men. Meanwhile, Krishna discovers the true identity of Priya; furious, he reveals himself as Krrish to Kaya and orders her to take him to Kaal's laboratory. Having fallen in love with Krishna, Kaya decides to help rescue his wife.

At Kaal's laboratory, it is revealed that Kaal is Rohit's son, who was created by an experiment conducted by Dr. Arya while Rohit was held hostage by him years earlier. The child was born handicapped, and was thus given away to an orphanage from where he was adopted by a wealthy man (Mohnish Behl). Kaal uses Rohit's bone marrow to successfully cure his handicap. Meanwhile, Kaya saves Priya and unites her with Krrish; she is, however, murdered by Kaal for her disloyalty. Kaal subsequently murders Krrish, and dons a metal suit. Deeply disturbed by his son's death, Rohit decides to re-use his failed experiment to bring dead tissues to life in order to save Krishna. This time, however, he absorbs the excess energy himself. The process simultaneously kills Rohit and transfers his powers to a revived Krishna. Meanwhile, Kaal threatens to destroy the city of Mumbai if Priya does not surrender to him. Krrish re-emerges and, after several unsuccessful attempts, manages to kill him using Rohit's solar experiment.

Six months later, Priya names their new-born son Rohit, who also exhibits superpowers.

Production
The film was referred to as both Krrish 2 and Krrish 3 in media reports. Hrithik Roshan confirmed in an interview to Rediff.com that on similar lines as with the Rambo franchise (where the first film was named First Blood, then came Rambo and then Rambo 3), the film will be called Krrish 3.[13] Rakesh Roshan also clarified the title to Bollywood Hungama.[14] In an interview director Rakesh Roshan said "I can't reveal the budget of the movie, but it has been a very costly film".[15] The film was reportedly made on a budget of ₹ 1.15 billion.[16] Red Chillies VFX, a subdivision of Shahrukh Khan's motion picture production banner Red Chillies Entertainment, worked on the special effects worth ₹260 million (US$3.9 million) for Krrish 3.[17] The filming process was completed in June 2012, and then the VFX team started their work.[18]

Filming

Sphinx Observatory at the Alps, portrayed as Kaal's laboratory in the film
"While shooting in hot and humid conditions in India - in the film studios in Hyderabad, and in Mumbai, the mask [made of wax] would get distorted and start melting. This was because of the high temperature, which would often go up to as high as 44 degrees. At times, it seems it was so hot that in a day, he [Hrithik Roshan] would end up changing five to six masks,"

- The Hindustan Times, who stated that Roshan ended up using 500 masks[19]
Principal photography began on 1 December 2011 with Vivek Oberoi, Kangana Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra. However, Hrithik Roshan did not participate in the first schedule due to a back injury.[20] The primary location of filming was Filmistan Studios at Mumbai.[21] Actress Shaurya Chauhan had an accident while shooting for the film in Hyderabad, due to which the film had to face some delays.[22] On 29 August 2012, it was reported that, the makers had decided the superhero to indulge in the action sequences in snowy terrains. So, some part of the film was shot in Alps, Switzerland.[23] Filming also took place in Jordan where a song featuring Roshan and Ranaut was shot.[24] Rakesh Roshan stated in an interview that the shooting of Krrish 3 was completed by June 2013 with the VFX took one and half years to complete with the last of them coming on 22 October 2013, just 10 days before the release of the film with each and every VFX action sequence undegoing a revision of 40 to 50 times before inclusion.[25]

Casting
Following the success of the previous instalments, director Rakesh Roshan planned to develop a second sequel to the franchise, with Hrithik Roshan playing the protagonist again. He had penned the script, but had to re-work it as the storyline was too similar to the Hollywood blockbuster Spider-Man 3.[26] Priyanka Chopra was later confirmed to reprise the role of Priya. In this film, she will be seen married to Krishna Mehra.[27]

Next, Chitrangada Singh announced her inclusion in the project as a mutant but left the film due to unspecified reasons. Later on, Jacqueline Fernandez was signed but she later on backed out of the film due to a lack of dates. It was reported that actresses Nargis Fakhri, Esha Gupta and Bipasha Basu were to replace Fernandez.[28][29] Finally, Kangana Ranaut was confirmed to play the role, who coincidentally was originally offered the role.[28] Rakesh Roshan had earlier revealed to media that the main antagonist of film would be as powerful as the hero.[30] After talks with Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan fell through, Vivek Oberoi was eventually cast for the role.[9][31] In an interview with Bollywood News Service, Oberoi said, "Kaal is contrary to my nature. I am very friendly and Kaal isn't," and added, "He has anger and vengeance burning within him; he hates humanity. To express these emotions through my eyes was difficult."[32]

In January 2011, Lakshmi Manchu claimed to have been offered a role in the film as the antagonist's girlfriend.[33] Its overseas distribution rights were sold to Eros International while Rakesh Roshan retained rights in Mumbai.[34] There was also initial speculation that Rekha would play a major role in the film, which was later denied as a rumour.[31]

Design and costumes
For the cast's costumes, Rakesh Roshan involved with designer Gavin Miguel. Roshan wanted light and flexible costume to allow Kangana Ranaut to do her stunts without any restrictions where he stated "She has a lot of toughness in her personality. So instead of looking at feminine superheroes for reference, I looked at Batman". It took three and half hours to apply Ranaut's makeup everyday.[35] Oberoi is dressed in metal suit weighing around 28 kilogramme which required about 2–3 hours and 7-8 workers to fix on body.[36]

Now in 2013, Sahir (Aamir Khan) has still not forgotten the high-handedness of the bank and swears revenge. He robs various branches of Western Bank of Chicago, leaving behind a message in Hindi and a clown mask. During the chase, he runs from top to the bottom of the Western Bank of Chicago building. As the police come to the scene, he runs into a van as they begin to surround the vehicle. Sahir jumps out in a BMW K1300R after a little explosion. On the chase, he slides under a truck and pops out to continue. He further kicks a police officer off his patrol motorcycle causing the officer to lose control and crash into a newspaper stand. While beyond that, Sahir continually tries to escape his pursuers and goes into a public parking garage. Then out of nowhere, he uses a steel cable cord like an attachment and rides his bike on it and is nearly knocked down by a train. despite all efforts of law enforcement, the robbery isn't foiled and he successfully gets away.

As Chicago Police Officer Victoria (Tabrett Bethell) fails to catch him, she calls ACP Jay Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and his partner, Ali (Uday Chopra), for help in solving the case. Jay baits Sahir into robbing again by making it known he's on the case and that he believes the thief to be an amateur thereby goading him on. Gathering information from a news channel regarding the plan, Sahir poses as an informant for Jay, and manages to gather information on the bank while giving Jay a lead to follow. Eventually, Sahir robs the bank and escapes, but Jay and Ali follow him. During the pursuit, Sahir nearly knocks Ali and stops on Wabash Avenue as the bridge rises, he drives straight and jumps off. His bike transforms into a jet ski. While on a water pursuit, Jay manages to take a boat and chases Sahir. After almost knocking off Ali, Sahir is almost about to reach the next bridge but the police arrive. Sahir dives underwater, then jumps out from the water transforming his jet ski back to his bike. Jay, while hanging on a helicopter ladder, manages to shoot Sahir on the left shoulder before he disappears again.

Sahir has a big premiere of a revamped version of The Great Indian Circus, with his female lead acrobat, Aaliya (Katrina Kaif), involving a trick with him disappearing in one place and showing up in another. The show is a success, but afterwards, Jay, Ali, and the police surround him, knowing he's the thief. Jai says the proof will be the gunshot wound, but when Sahir is examined, there is no evidence of a gunshot wound anywhere on his body. Jay and Ali leave while Sahir retires to his dressing room. It is then revealed that Sahir has an autistic twin brother, Samar, who helps him pull off his trick and helps him in planning and pulling of the robberies (like the rope string stunt and ejecting the jet-ski bike) and it was Samar who sustained the gun-shot wound.

Jay is fired from the case, but is encouraged by Ali to prove Sahir's guilt by going rogue. Jay eventually finds out about Samar, and sets about finding a way to corner Sahir. Samar, being mentally challenged, is kept in seclusion by Sahir. However, he allows Samar outdoors once a week, and Jay manages to befriend him during this time in order to perform his plan. Samar has fallen in love with Aaliya after performing with her in the circus, but cannot express it. This leads to a rift between the brothers. Jay tries to take advantage of this, but Sahir finds out and thwarts Jay's plan to stop them. When Sahir comes in the disguise of Samar, Jay reveals his true identity and assuming him to be Samar, tells him to surrender since he can give them justice. When Sahir reveals himself, he ties Jay to the track of a roller coaster and tells him that he used Samar for his own benefit. He switches the roller coaster on but Ali arrives in time to save him from being crushed. He decides the only way to catch the brothers is in the act of robbing. Sahir and Samar pull off their final bank heist, and escape. However, the following day, Jay manages to corner them as they're making their way out of town. They rob on 22 May. Samar is hesitant to run when Aaliya shows up, begging him to stop. Sahir surrenders to Jay, asking him to spare Samar. Jai agrees, but right after, Sahir attempts to jump off the dam. Samar grabs Sahir's hand, refusing to let him go. Sahir begs Samar to let go, saying he can live freely with Aaliya. But Samar says that both of them are born together and should die together. Eventually, the two of them jump off the dam together. Western Bank of Chicago is shut down as a result of the heists, while Aaliya is shown having taken over The Great Indian Circus and still performing for it.

Production
Prior to principal photography, the film enjoyed widespread media coverage[20][21] due to the tremendous box office successes[22][23][24] of previous instalments Dhoom 2 and Dhoom, thereby creating anticipation amongst audience and media.[25] On 2 January 2011, the producer of the previous Dhoom films Aditya Chopra, confirmed that the third instalment of the Dhoom series would begin principal photography by the end of 2011. Initially, the producers and the lead actor Aamir wanted to release the film on Christmas of 2012,[26] but the plan was scrapped in favour of an early release date in 2013, mainly due to a forecast that a Christmas release would force a rushed post-production schedule, which was considered unfavorable given the high degree of technicality required for the film.[27] Dhoom 3 had around ₹1.25 billion (US$19 million) spent on just production side.[28]

Reportedly, Chopra wanted to make the film in 3D after observing the successes of previous Bollywood films released in the same format. However, actor Aamir Khan opined that the 3D technology needed expertise and was unsure of the outcome of its utilisation by the director.[29] As of September 2012, YRF Studios had not announced the production of the film in 3D.[30]

Casting
Aamir Khan was signed on to essay the lead antagonist, while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra were confirmed to reprise their roles as Jai Dixit and Ali Akbar respectively.[31] Katrina Kaif was signed as the lead heroine, starring opposite Khan. He learnt ballet,[32] aerobatics[33] and the French technique of parkour,[34] a method of movement focused on negotiating obstacles with speed and efficiency, while Kaif took paragliding training and singing lessons.[35] Bachchan reportedly lost nine kilos of weight to prepare for his role in the film.[36] Rimi Sen, who played the role of ACP Jai Dixit's (character played by Abhishek Bachchan) wife in the previous two instalments of the series, was not approached to play her character Sweety. However, she stated that she would not have reprised the role even if she were offered.[37][38] Unlike the first two Dhoom films directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, Vijay Krishna Acharya the writer of all three instalments of Dhoom was roped in to direct Dhoom 3.[31] Stunt Director Olliver Keller was signed to direct the stunt scenes.[39] Aamir Khan stated in an interview that his role in Dhoom 3 is the toughest role so far in his life.[40] The action scenes were directed by Conrad Palmisano and Sham Kaushal.[41] In an interview with IANS, Abhishek Bachchan expressed how every character of Dhoom 3 is significant: "...Dhoom is my film and I am the hero. Nobody can take that away from me. You can be the biggest or the smallest star but Dhoom is about Jai and Ali. It is as simple as that. If the characters of Jai and Ali are not there in Dhoom, the film won't be there."[42] On 23 September 2013, three months before the actual release of the film, DNA and other media news publications revealed that there could be double role of Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3, but they have not confirmed it that time.[43][44][45][46][47][48][49] It was only confirmed at the release of the film, that Aamir Khan has a double role in the film. This made Dhoom 3 the first and currently the only film yet, in the Dhoom movie series, in which the antagonist has a double role. However, this was not the first time the series featured a double role since Bipasha Basu had a double role in Dhoom 2 as Shonali and Monali, but did not share the same screen space, unlike Khan.

Filming

Contra Dam in Switzerland, where the climax of the film was shot
Filming was scheduled to commence from November 2011, with scenes involving Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra being shot first,[50] but the former was off on a paternity leave and thus, shooting was postponed to January 2012. In January 2012, the schedule was pushed to June 2012 because of lead actor Aamir's prior commitments with his TV show Satyamev Jayate; in June, the filming schedule was further postponed for a month because Khan wanted to prepare himself for his role of a gymnast. Additionally, Khan wanted to concentrate on marketing and promotions of his 2012 film Talaash.[51] Without any further delays, filming commenced with Jackie Shroff and Siddharth Nigam, the child actor playing the role of childhood Aamir Khan on 8 June 2012 at Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai.[52] Aamir Khan joined the crew in July 2012, filming for five days at Yash Raj Studios and further continued to shoot in Chicago and other parts of the United States. Later, Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra flew to the US on 4 August 2012 to complete a three-month schedule. On arrival to India in December 2012, Bachchan stated that fifty percent of filming was complete and would again resume in Mumbai.[53] In the second week of March 2013, it was reported that the crew departed to Zurich and Ticino, Switzerland to film the climax.[54][55] The shooting of the film finally wrapped up on 14 September 2013 at a suburban studio in Mumbai.[56] The climax scene in Dhoom 3 is shot at the famous arch dam, Contra Dam (commonly known as the Verzasca Dam) in Ticino, Switzerland.[57] It is the same dam that became a popular bungee jumping venue after a James Bond stuntman jumped off it in the opening scene of the 1995 film GoldenEye.[58]

Release
In November 2013, Aditya Chopra sent out a message to movie exhibitors all over the country to "Go digital or miss Dhoom 3." In detailed statements he claimed, "Release of movies through digital and UFO digital cinema prevents piracy as the prints are water-marked and finger-printed and can be traced back. It is believed that usually films are copied for piracy when the reels are being transported to theatres in the country and abroad. Digital cinema curbs piracy as the 'en route' content leakage is eliminated. It also makes sense economically as a producer saves a lot of print cost. Apart from that, encrypting the content protects the copyrights of the producers and distributors. Digital prints prevent duplication of prints and helps by diverting funds back to the cinemas."[59][60][61][62]
